I am interested in the impact of ones personal experience of place. I am investigating these ideas through the clay medium. My sculpture and wall reliefs are created through folding, scoring, incising and painting which echo processes found in nature. Mark making becomes the vehicle to give material presence and form to express the intangible. These sketches as I sometimes refer to them become a footprint to articulate transformation of the landscape --- its continuous cycle between creation and destruction. Building on my previous training as a painter, I use layers of ceramic glaze colors, creating an active, patina surface.
My work is ambiguous in scale and space where the cellular, molecular and organismal are confounded. Most recently, I am using a pod like form and its environs to further investigate. I hope to offer to the viewer a window into quiet, contemplative, yet poetically charged universe.
